Description of the organisation
Vario-optics ag, is a start-up company (SME) focussing on the fabrication of electro-optical printed circuit boards based on polymer optical waveguides. It owns all the required fabrication technologies and application specific infrastructure for the manufacturing of planar polymer waveguides. vario-optics has a world-wide customer basis. The applications range from industrial and medical sensors to optical communication applications.
Role in the project
The main tasks within this project
- Development of a singlemode optical circuit board as carrier for silicon-photonic components (WP2)
Development of appropriate optical and electrical interfaces in order to enable cost-effective assembly of silicon-photonic components, integrated circuits, and optical connectivity elements (WP5)
Key people involved
Tobias Lamprecht (male) earned his Ph.D. from the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, in 2011, and graduated from the University of Applied Sciences NTB Buchs, Switzerland, in Systems Engineering in 2003. He joined the Institute for Microsystems, Buchs, Switzerland as an Engineer in 2001, and Lynntech Inc., USA, in 2003. He worked as engineer for IBM Research Zurich, Switzerland, pursuing research on polymer optical waveguides. Since 2010 he is with vario-optics ag, Heiden, Switzerland, as CTO (Chief Technology Officer), responsible for the technology development.
Felix Betschon (male) received his master degree in electrical engineering at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETHZ) in 1996. He then worked as research assistant at ETHZ where he received his PhD in 2001. From 2001 – 2007 he held different positions within the R&D organization of Oerlikon ESEC, at the end as Head of R&D. From 2007 – 2008 he was responsible for the electronics development department of Presta ThyssenKrupp in Budapest. 2008 he joined Varioprint AG where he spun-off the electro-optical circuit board activities into the independent company vario-optics ag. Since then he is CEO of this company.
